Adipose tissue plays a pivotal role in energy storage and metabolic balance, primarily achieved through the enlargement of mature adipocytes or the differentiation of preadipocytes into new adipocytes. Preadipocytes, already present in adipose tissues, proliferate throughout adulthood, offering a unique opportunity for studying the physiological mechanisms governing adipose tissue proliferation, differentiation, and function, controlled by various growth factors and hormones.
