Epithelial cells

Epithelial cells are specialized cells that line body surfaces and cavities, forming protective barriers in tissues such as the skin, respiratory tract, urinary tract, and gastrointestinal system. Primary human epithelial cells are widely used in vitro to study barrier function, tissue homeostasis, and disease mechanisms relevant to inflammation, infection, and epithelial-derived cancers.

Because primary epithelial cells are sensitive to culture conditions and can lose their phenotypic characteristics outside of their native environment, well-defined media formulations are essential to maintain cell identity, functionality, and experimental reproducibility.
